The CASp program and certification was created and is maintained by the California Division of the State Architect (DSA). This certification ensures an individual is experienced and qualified to evaluate buildings and facilities for compliance with federal and state accessibility requirements. Certification is obtained by demonstrating eligibility and by passing a rigorous two-part exam testing the application and knowledge of state and federal accessibility requirements. Detailed eligibility requirements can be found in the CASp Handbook hosted on the DGS CASp Certification website.
The CASp Scope of Work includes:
- Review of facility plans and specs for compliance with state and federal accessibility laws, standards, codes, and regulations.
- Investigate a facility for compliance with state and federal accessibility laws, standards, codes, and regulations.
- Conduct accessibility research, prepare accessibility reports, and/or conduct accessibility inspections as authorized, often utilizing ada consultant services.
- Issue inspection reports and disability access inspection certificates (DAICs) in accordance with the requirements in Civil Code section 55.53, performed by trained ada inspectors.
MBCS employs four CASp consultants who specialize in CASp inspections.
The APAC-BE certification was established by the Accessibility Professionals Association to showcase an individual's knowledge, skills, and abilities in applying accessibility requirements as outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other model codes and standards. An individual who successfully passes the APAC-BE exam can effectively interpret accessibility scoping requirements for any facility, making them a valuable asset among ADA consultants and ADA inspectors.
Although the APAC-BE certification is not officially endorsed or mandated by any government agency, an APAC-BE certified individual brings expert knowledge and a unique perspective to any project, similar to that of a CASP consultant providing CASP inspection services.
MBCS proudly employs five professionals who hold the APAC-BE certification.
The International Code Council (ICC) offers the ICC Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner certification to individuals wishing to demonstrate knowledge and skills in evaluating building plans and performing field evaluations for compliance with the accessibility requirements of the International Building Code and ICC A117.1. This certification is essential for those providing ada consultant services, as it ensures a thorough understanding of accessibility standards. Additionally, the role of an Accessibility Inspector / Plans Examiner includes conducting inspections, reviewing plans, and making determinations of code compliance, similar to the responsibilities of ada inspectors. MBCS employs one ICC Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner, who also serves as a casp consultant, ensuring that all aspects of casp inspection are met.
The ADA Coordinator training certification program (ACTCP) was developed in collaboration between the Great Plains ADA Center and the University of Missouri. These two parties conducted surveys of real ADA Coordinators and used their input to develop the ADA Coordinator Training Certification Program. The ACTCP establishes that an individual possesses a knowledge base essential for performing the role of an ADA Coordinator, verified through quality training materials and content. It also confirms the completion of training credits and provides an exam for individuals to obtain the ADA Coordinator certification (ADAC). For those looking for expert guidance, ADA consultant services can be invaluable for organizations needing compliance oversight and assistance with grievance procedures.
The role of an ADA Coordinator is to:
- Provide compliance oversight within organizations
- Establish grievance procedures
- Promote public awareness
- Provide training and education
- Perform accessibility assessments
- Be a resource for accommodations and reasonable modifications, including working closely with ADA inspectors and CASP consultants.
MBCS employs six ADACs, who are equipped to assist with CASP inspections and ensure that all accessibility standards are met.
